Flag Beach

Flag Beach, known locally as Playa de la Bandera, is a three-kilometre stretch of soft, pale sand nestled within the Parque Natural de Corralejo, approximately three to four kilometres south of Corralejo town. Backed by impressive dunes and facing the expansive Atlantic, from late spring through autumn, the skies above are typically dotted with dozens of kites.

Its global renown for windsurfing and kitesurfing is truly earned. The northeast trade winds blow consistently and reliably here from May through September, typically reaching Force 4 to Force 6 in the afternoons. The seabed remains shallow for the first hundred metres, offering a forgiving sandy bottom ideal for learners. The beach itself faces northeast, ensuring a predominantly side-onshore wind – perfect for kite progression.

Yet, Flag Beach isn't solely for seasoned experts. Mornings, particularly before 11 am, often offer calm conditions ideal for swimming and snorkelling away from the watersports zone. Its generous width means that companions not participating in watersports can relax on a towel without being buffeted by the wind.

A number of established schools operate directly on the sand. The longest-established, Flag Beach Windsurf & Kitesurf Centre, boasts IKO and VDWS certified instructors, equipment hire, taster sessions, and comprehensive multi-day courses. A beginner half-day session typically costs between 80 and 120 euros, with per-session rates decreasing for longer courses.

Flag Beach is renowned as an excellent place to learn, thanks to its forgiving conditions, featuring consistent wind direction, a sandy seabed, and a dedicated watersports zone free from boats and swimmers. Intermediate riders find it perfect for rapid progression, while advanced enthusiasts are drawn by the consistent conditions and the chance to ride alongside professionals.

Even for those not hitting the water, there's ample to enjoy: long beach walks leading into the dunes, tranquil morning swims, and snorkelling opportunities along the rocky fringes. A single beach bar, Waikiki, provides a convenient spot for lunch and refreshing drinks. Always remember sunscreen; the cooling effect of the wind can mask the intensity of the sun, leading to unexpected sunburn.

Flag Beach lies three to four kilometres south of Corralejo, accessible via the FV-1 road. Visitors can drive (free roadside parking is available but fills rapidly by 11 am in summer), walk along the beachfront from Corralejo old town (a pleasant 40-minute stroll), or opt for a five-euro taxi ride.

For optimal wind conditions, May to August are the prime months. Conversely, October through April offer calmer conditions, making them ideal for swimming and relaxed family beach days. Water temperatures range from 18-19°C in winter to 21-23°C in late summer.

If watersports aren't your focus, mornings are highly recommended. The wind is lightest before 11 am, ensuring the sand remains settled, and the water's colour at sunrise is truly spectacular. By 3 pm in summer, the wind typically picks up considerably, often causing sand to sting exposed ankles.
