Playa de Esquinzo

Playa de Esquinzo presents an expansive stretch of golden sand along Fuerteventura's eastern Jandía coast, nestled between Costa Calma to the north and Morro Jable to the south. It naturally divides into several named sections — Esquinzo proper, Butihondo, and Playa del Matorral — though the boundaries gently blur with each step. The area is characterised by several large resort hotels situated just behind the dunes. While the beach is publicly accessible, it is, in practice, primarily frequented by hotel guests.

The waters here are noticeably calmer than those on the exposed windward beaches further north, offering a gentle slope and reliably safe swimming conditions. The sand is softer and lighter in colour than that found at Cofete or the island's northern surf beaches. Towards the rear of the beach, rocky outcrops create small tide pools, perfect for children to explore.

This isn't a 'destination beach' in the same vein as Sotavento or Cofete. It lacks a singular defining attraction, the drama of an Atlantic swell, or the buzz of a major event like the World Cup. Instead, it offers kilometres of tranquil, swimmable coastline, attracting a mere fraction of the visitors seen at Fuerteventura's more famous stretches.

Most of the beach offers limited facilities: you'll find a few designated sun lounger sections for hotel guests and occasional showers, but no large public beach bars. Visitors not staying at the adjacent resorts should come prepared with water, snacks, high-factor sunscreen, and personal shade (such as an umbrella or sun tent). For lunch, several decent restaurants are available within the hotel complexes, just a short walk inland.

Snorkelling along the rocky fringes at the southern end is quite rewarding. Visibility is typically excellent, revealing small reef fish darting among the rocks. It's advisable to bring your own gear, as rental options are unreliable here.

The water remains pleasantly warm for swimming year-round, peaking at around 22°C in late summer and settling around 19°C during winter months. Winds are gentler here than on more exposed coasts, so even on a breezy day, finding a sheltered spot is usually straightforward.

An hour-long stroll south along the sands will lead you to Playa del Matorral and Morro Jable – a delightful, uninterrupted beach walk, tide permitting.
